Aston Villa have made a slow start this summer, but that could all still change if certain star names depart or some bargain deals emerge for Unai Emery.

Those in the Midlands are still operating with SCR (formerly PSR) rules at the forefront of their thinking, but should still have more space for incomings thanks to Champions League qualification.

What this means is that bargain deals will be on their agenda unless someone like Morgan Rogers heads for the exit door at around £100m. It’s not stopped Villa’s success in recent years and if players like Lloyd Kelly arrive, Emery’s side will be backed to simply kick on.

Football FanCast’s Verdict

Credibility

Aston Villa are unlikely to break the bank this summer and that’s why someone like Kelly is one to watch. He represents the chance to welcome a homegrown player without paying over the odds. Any potential deal is still at an early stage, but reports suggest that the Villans are certainly preparing to progress their interest.

Finances

Juventus reportedly value Kelly at just €35m (£30m), but even then, Villa could land an even cheaper deal closer to the €30m (£26m) mark.

Insight

The central defender knows all about Premier League football, having previously played for Bournemouth. Now, he could return as a player who’s experienced the top level at Juventus and earned plenty of respect at one of the biggest clubs in Italy.

Impact

Given that Aston Villa’s current centre-back options consist of 29-year-old Pau Torres and 33-year-old Tyrone Mings, the addition of 27-year-old Kelly would be perfect timing, especially as Ezri Konsa continues to impress.

All signs are pointing towards a deal that Aston Villa should chase this summer. Whether they turn their interest into an offer remains to be seen, however.

Aston Villa readying Lloyd Kelly move

As reported by TuttoJuve in Italy, Aston Villa are now readying a move to sign Kelly from Juventus. The Midlands club are gathering information about the centre-back and their interest has been deemed ‘real’ as Juventus wait for potential negotiations to get underway.

Whilst valued at €35m (£30m) in Italy, there is belief that a cheaper move could still take place – allowing Aston Villa to pay a cut-price worth around €30m (£26m) in the coming months.

That would certainly suit those at Villa Park, who still have SCR rules hanging over them.

How Kelly could help solve Aston Villa’s SCR problems

When looking at Kelly, it’s a deal that makes sense for a number of reasons. On the pitch, this is a defender who has stepped things up since leaving the Premier League and now has that European calibre to step into a side like Aston Villa.

Off the pitch, meanwhile, the 27-year-old would be another homegrown star. This means another sellable asset for SCR reasons. Should things fail to work out, Villa could sell for pure profit. Of course, they’ll hope it doesn’t come to that, but it’s something they have to consider amid their close run-ins with the financial rules.

For the price of £25m, Villa could solve a problem on the pitch or, later down the line, help fend off those attempting to hand out financial sanctions.
