Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer enters the 2026 season as one of college football’s top arms, despite an up-and-down debut year with the Sooners last fall. He drew plenty of attention at the Manning Passing Academy this past weekend — but it was his dramatic body transformation, not his play, that dominated the conversation.
Mateer looked noticeably more muscular at the event, with photos of his new physique quickly going viral on social media. But was it good weight?
After all, just two of the last 10 Heisman Trophy winners — Baker Mayfield and Fernando Mendoza — weighed 220+ pounds in college. Neither had a build quite like Mateer, who was listed at 6-foot-1, 218 pounds last season and appears to have added at least 5–10 pounds of muscle this offseason.
CBS Sports insiders and sources at the event had differing opinions on Mateer’s newly bulked-up frame — and whether it will ultimately help or hurt him in the 2026 season — via Cover 3.
