The Premier League may be on pause for the time being, but that’s not set to stop clubs from coming to blows in the summer transfer window.
Everton, Newcastle United and Aston Villa are all now racing to sign young Australia star Lucas Herrington. The 18-year-old defender is quickly becoming one of the most in-demand talents in Europe following his World Cup performance.

Football FanCast’s Verdict |

|---|---|
|
Credibility |
The World Cup is all about breakout stars and the 2026 tournament is no different. Even after missing his penalty in the shootout against Egypt, Herrington has plenty of admirers who have already made their interest known. Colorado Rapids are now ready to green-light his exit as a result. |
|
Finances |
Colorado’s asking price remains to be seen, but Herrington is unlikely to break the bank at such a young age in the MLS. Instead, Colorado are more concerned about welcoming the defender back on loan for another season. |
|
Scouting |
The teenager played 210 minutes at the World Cup and impressed in that time, making 0.86 tackles and winning three duels per game whilst maintaining an 88.4% pass accuracy. |
|
Impact |
It’s a chance to welcome a rising star and the chance to get one over on a rival club for several Premier League sides. In a hectic race, however, it remains to be seen who comes out on top. |
Herrington is one to watch for good reason and could be on his way to the Premier League sooner rather than later.
Everton, Newcastle and Aston Villa race to sign Herrington
As reported by TeamTalk, Newcastle, Everton and Aston Villa have joined the race to sign Herrington, opening talks for the defender to make their interest known.
They are joined by the likes of Barcelona and Colorado Rapids are now ready to green-light an exit for their teenage star, but are hoping to land him back on loan for another season.
Herrington is quickly becoming one of the most wanted teenage stars in Europe and could enter the history books as the latest breakout star from the World Cup.
Newcastle can add another rising star after Steurs
Newcastle have burst into life in the summer transfer window, welcoming Bouzamana Toure and Sean Steurs. The latter arrives as a rising star, having come through the Ajax academy. Still just 18 years old, the midfielder is one to watch as he attempts to steal the headlines in Eddie Howe‘s midfield.
Young players are certainly on the agenda for Newcastle, too. The Magpies could instantly add to Steurs by signing Herrington, who may well become the long-term partner to Malick Thiaw that the Tyneside club desperately need.
Signing Herrington would match Newcastle’s summer business so far and welcome yet another rising star. Whilst the present has been so full of negativity in the last 12 months, the future looks bright at St James’ Park.
