Julian Brandt would represent one of the best signings Leeds have attempted in recent years.

On paper, it almost feels too good to be true. A player with hundreds of Bundesliga appearances, Champions League pedigree and nearly 50 Germany caps does not usually become available to a club still trying to establish itself back in the Premier League.

That is exactly why Leeds should push this opportunity as far as possible.

Even at 30, Brandt remains a player capable of producing moments that change matches. He is not the quickest footballer, nor is he the most physical, but his intelligence, technical quality and creativity more than make up for those shortcomings.

Daniel Farke also appears to be an ideal manager for him.

Rather than asking him to cover huge distances or rely on pace, Leeds could build attacks around his passing range, movement and ability to unlock stubborn defences.

Experience is another factor that should not be underestimated.

Leeds have added exciting younger players in recent windows, but surviving in the Premier League also requires footballers who have performed under pressure.

Brandt has featured regularly in the Bundesliga, played deep into European competitions and experienced title races. Those qualities could prove invaluable inside the dressing room.

This being said, his wages would likely be among the highest at Elland Road, while adapting to the intensity of the Premier League at this stage of his career would present a fresh challenge.

Football FanCast’s Verdict

Credibility

This story comes from Graham Smyth, who is Leeds United’s chief football writer for the Yorkshire Evening Post and is widely regarded as one of the club’s most reliable journalists. He regularly attends matches, covers Thorp Arch and has built strong contacts within the club, making him a trusted source for Leeds transfer developments.

Finances

Brandt is available on a Bosman after leaving Borussia Dortmund, removing the need for a big transfer deal. The biggest financial hurdle is likely to be wages and signing-on fees, with Leeds expected to face competition from clubs capable of offering higher salaries and European football.

Insight

Brandt emerged at Bayer Leverkusen before spending seven seasons with Borussia Dortmund, developing into one of Germany’s most creative attacking midfielders. Comfortable as a number 10, winger or advanced midfielder, he is known for his vision, close control and intelligent movement.

Impact

Brandt could transform Leeds’ attacking play by providing creativity between the lines and improving the service to the forwards. His experience at the highest level would also raise standards throughout the squad, while his versatility would give Farke several options during a demanding Premier League campaign.

Even so, opportunities like this rarely come around.

Signing a free agent of Brandt’s calibre would be a statement that Leeds are thinking beyond simply avoiding relegation.

That ambition has now received another boost following the latest update from Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth.

Julian Brandt’s camp considering Leeds move with Thorp Arch talks held

Writing on X, Smyth revealed Leeds made contact with Brandt’s representatives early to make their interest clear and remain firmly involved in discussions over a potential move.

He added that the Germany international and his camp are currently weighing up every available option before deciding on the next step in his career, with Elland Road firmly under consideration.

Smyth also disclosed that Brandt’s father, Jürgen, visited Thorp Arch this week for talks with Leeds.

However, he stressed that this does not mean an agreement is close, pointing out that Brandt’s father was also seen holding discussions with Real Betis earlier in the summer before the Spanish club decided not to pursue a deal.

The update suggests Leeds remain firmly in the race rather than leading it.

With Brandt available as a free agent after leaving Dortmund, there is no shortage of interest, meaning patience may be required before any final decision is made.

For Leeds, simply remaining in the conversation is encouraging.

Whether they can convince Brandt that Yorkshire is the right destination now depends on the project Farke and the club can present over the coming days.
