Derby open talks to sign “explosive” forward who’s also wanted by Birmingham

Derby County have opened talks to sign FC Basel star Philip Otele, but there could be competition from Championship rivals Birmingham City.

After coming up just short in the race for the play-offs last season, Derby are looking to improve their forward line this summer, and Otele could be an exciting addition to John Eustace’s squad.

Upon signing for FC Basel, the five-cap Nigeria international received major plaudits from sporting director Daniel Stucki, who said: “Philip Otele is a very explosive player who brings another interesting element to our offensive game with his physique.

“Thanks to his age, he has already gained a lot of experience and is a great alternative for us on the wing or in attack. We are very happy that this good opportunity has now presented itself and that we have been able to win him for FCB.”

The 27-year-old has maintained a solid record in front of goal for the Swiss side, finding the net on 18 occasions in 55 matches, while also providing eight assists.

Having proven himself in a number of different leagues, the left-winger, who can also be deployed as a centre-forward, may now be ready for a move to England, and clubs are queuing up to secure his signature.

According to a report from GiveMeSport, Otele will leave Basel this summer, and Derby have now opened talks regarding a potential move to Pride Park.

Hamburg opted not to sign the Nigerian on a permanent basis, which means his future is up in the air, with Lecce, Frosinone and Birmingham City keen.

Having sent the forward out on loan to Hamburg last season, Basel are prepared to sanction a sale, with the Swiss side looking to hold out for €5m (£4.3m).

Derby will be hoping for some major signings soon, amid rumours Turki Alalshikh is on the verge of having an investment into the club ratified.

Eustace has admitted he has heard a takeover is on the cards, but the manager insisted his main focus is preparing his side for the EFL Cup first round tie against Lincoln City later this week, saying: “You hear different things through the media obviously. I have spoken to the club, and they have mentioned there is a takeover. But I think there have been about three takeovers since I’ve been here, with people trying to buy the club.

“It was the same at my previous clubs, too. Until something is done, I will take it seriously. Until then, all I am focused on is preparing the team as best I can so we can get off to a really competitive start next week.”
