For Manchester United to play their football without Bruno Fernandes in the mix is unthinkable, but sooner or later, it will become a reality.
Fernandes turns 32 in less than one month, and while he remains the linchpin of this Red Devils team, Father Time will come for him eventually – should the Portuguese Magnifico not venture off for pastures new soon.
As all involved with Man United know, Fernandes is one of the best players in the world. He swept home a load of individual accolades in the Premier League, the mastermind of Michael Carrick‘s resurgence at Old Trafford.
He broke the all-time assist record for a single season, but in truth, Fernandes’ influence stretched much wider still.

It’s crucial, as United step back into the Champions League, that Fernandes remains, wearing the armband and directing creative traffic. It’s crucial that Galatasaray are swatted away as they start to sniff around.
The latest on Bruno Fernandes’ Man Utd future
Manchester United have said, in no uncertain terms, that Fernandes is not for sale this summer.
Unequivocally. The veteran attacking midfielder still has one year left on his bumper contract, but United are not interested in parting ways with the definitive superstar of the modern era. A contract extension has even been offered, though nothing has progressed at this stage.
Since joining the club in 2020, Fernandes has grown into one of the Premier League’s leading players. Galatasaray spy a rare opportunity, reportedly willing to double his wages and pay a £43m fee to bring him over to Turkey.
The Red Devils have told them to think again, and rightly so. United cannot operate at the ambitious level they desire over the coming year without Fernandes pulling the strings. Last season, he scored nine goals and provided 22 assists across all competitions.
For now, United must fight off suitors, but Fernandes is no spring chicken, and this concerning saga does emphasise the fact that Fernandes won’t be at Old Trafford forever.
Man United need a long-term successor.
Man Utd have already discovered the new Bruno Fernandes
When Fernandes does draw down the curtain on his career at the Theatre of Dreams, it’s inevitiable, necessary, that INEOS sign an elite replacement – but Carrick and co will be aware that they might already have the dream heir in the Carrington ranks.
Meet JJ Gabriel. You may have already heard of him. The 15-year-old forward has caused something of a storm since emerging in the academy, with reporter Steven Railston describing him as “one of the most exciting talents in the world” and journalist Oliver Holt describing him as “the best young English talent since Wayne Rooney.”
Gabriel does not turn 16 until October, but as he continues to grow into his skin, it’s already clear that he is endowed with a special kind of balance and athleticism and technicality. Across 32 appearances for the U18s, he has posted 29 goals and four assits.
The Manchester Evening News’ readership have even suggested Gabriel might be “the best talent the academy has ever seen“. It’s important not to clamp weights onto up-and-coming prospects, but Gabriel has been fast-tracked, already having completed any number of training sessions with the first team and playing a part for the senior side during pre-season.

While the teenager continues to learn his own skillset and figure out where he will fall onto the positional spectrum when ready to make his senior bow, he has played plenty of football in a roaming No. 10-type role, and therefore, could prove the perfect Fernandes heir down the line.
Gabriel is a creative player, but he will never be a natural-born playmaker of the same type as Bruno. That is simply not his forte. Instead, he could prove a probing, incisive attacking piece to complement the centre-forward.
This would mean that INEOS need to find a new out-and-out creator to charge Carrick’s system, but Gabriel is so prodigious a talent that it would be ludicrous not to provide him with a pathway up to the big time – especially as rival Premier League outfits start to sniff around.
Wherever Carrick and United’s youth coaches deem Gabriel’s development is best served over the coming campaign, there’s no question that he has the potential to become one of club’s leading attackers down the line.
A far more dynamic and electric profile than Fernandes, it might serve the Red Devils well to produce a contrasting profile, and Gabriel could deliver exactly that.
