Ranking each week of 2026 college football schedule by watchability: Early November weekend has elite matchups

There has been a lot of online discourse about how much football real fans should be watching on Saturdays, but we can be honest with one another. Not all college football schedules are created equally.

Some weeks, you won’t even be able to make a run to the refrigerator without missing several snaps of top 25 action. Other weeks, you’ll be staring at a few blowouts in the quadbox and anxiously awaiting the next round of kickoffs.

With that in mind, I went through each week of the college football schedule to rank the slates from worst to best. These rankings are based on a proprietary tiers system I developed. Here’s a rough description of each tier:

• Tier 1: Matchups consisting of elite vs. elite. You will schedule your entire day around these games.
• Tier 2: Games featuring College Football Playoff contenders, rivalry games with national appeal and impactful conference matchups.
• Tier 3: These can be regional rivalry games, sneaky fun conference games and really any undercard matchup with the potential to get sideways.

Those tiers are subjective, but I did my best to make Tier 1 an exclusive club. Nothing is special if everything is special. Beyond that, certain games are going to matter more to certain fan bases, so these games were sorted from the perspective of a neutral college football fan who just loves ball.

With all that said, here is every week of the 2026 college football season ranked by entertainment value.

14. Week 0 | Aug. 29

This is a better Week 0 slate than we typically get, but it’s only an appetizer for the real deal. NC State vs. Virginia may wind up having ACC Championship implications, and the Bill Belichick experiment is going international. It’s a nice warmup for the rest of the season.

13. Week 1 | Sept. 3-7

The excitement that accompanies Week 1 might be enough to counteract a pretty brutal slate of season openers. Louisville and Ole Miss should put on a show, UCLA vs. Cal features a fascinating quarterback battle, and the matchup between Baylor and Auburn could go a long way to foreshadowing each team’s season. Still, the Week 1 schedule lacks Tier 1 marquee matchups with many power-conference teams easing into the season by playing Group of Six or FCS opponents.

12. Week 5 | Oct. 1-3

There are some fun matchups here. Washington vs. USC is a massive game for both sides — as is Louisville vs. NC State. Bryce Underwood and Drake Lindsey should be two of the better quarterbacks in the Big Ten, and we have some quality Group of Six clashes, including a service academy matchup. That said, how many of these games feature two true heavyweights? None.

11. Week 9 | Oct. 27-31

There’s a chance that Ohio State vs. USC is a Tier 1 matchup by the time we get to Week 9, but I’m not ready to give USC the benefit of the doubt just yet. There’s some upset potential for Texas Tech, Georgia and BYU. Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and CJ Bailey going head-to-head in Raleigh should also be a lot of fun. This isn’t a terrible slate, but another Tier 1 matchup or two would give it a nice boost.

10. Week 3 | Sept. 17-19

The No. 1 game on this slate is appointment viewing. Lane Kiffin making his return to Oxford as a villain will be a sight to see, and the winner of SMU vs. Louisville might be in the driver’s seat for a trip to the ACC Championship. There are other games with mild intrigue, but the rest of the slate doesn’t really move the needle as a whole.

9. Week 8 | Oct. 20-24

Anyone up for a little basket weaving? Steve Sarkisian cut a promo on Ole Miss in the offseason, and his Longhorns will host the Rebels in Week 8 for what should be a battle of elite quarterbacks in Arch Manning and Trinidad Chambliss. Elsewhere around the country, this slate brings us some sneaky good conference matchups in the Power Four (and the Mountain West).

8. Week 2 | Sept. 10-12

All the juice from Week 1 has apparently been transfused into Week 2, where we have some real bangers. There’s a top-five matchup in Austin, the Sooners go on the road to Ann Arbor and Arizona vs. BYU will provide an early preview of the Big 12 title race. On top of that, we’ll get a very good look at just how improved Oklahoma State is with Oregon coming to Stillwater.

7. Week 12 | Nov. 17-21

Notre Dame doesn’t have many obvious opportunities for a slip-up on its schedule, but this is one of them. The Fighting Irish do get the Mustangs at home, but I don’t expect fifth-year senior Kevin Jennings to be rattled in that situation. Beyond that, Indiana gets a very tough road test at Washington, and Lane Kiffin returns to Neyland Stadium for the first time since he was dodging mustard bottles and golf balls.

6. Week 4 | Sept. 24-26

Between Oregon vs. USC and Texas A&M vs. LSU, we have a couple really compelling rivalry matchups on this slate. The headliner is a matchup between Oklahoma and Georgia in which both offenses might get beaten to a pulp. Additionally, a Manning takes the field in Neyland Stadium for the first time since 1997, and that Big 12 clash between Oklahoma State and West Virginia could get sideways.

5. Week 6 | Oct. 6-10

The Red River Rivalry always delivers, and the hype around this year’s game should be even greater than ever with both teams eyeing deep College Football Playoff runs. That bumps Georgia at Alabama from the top line, but that clash will still have huge implications on the SEC title race. This isn’t a terribly deep slate, but we do get great Pac-12 and Mountain West matchups.

4. Week 11 | Nov. 10-14

Texas traveling to Death Valley pretty much sells itself without even getting into the personalities of the coaches involved. Tier 2 is pretty loaded this week with enormous conference games in the Big Ten, SEC and Big 12. The ACC doesn’t have a major headliner, but Cal and Virginia have legitimate hopes to reach Charlotte. It’ll be fascinating to see how the Cowboys offense fares against the Red Raiders defense.

3. Week 13 | Nov. 24-28

It should come as no surprise that rivalry week lands near the top of the rankings. Does any rivalry game get as much play in August as The Game? I can’t name one. Texas A&M has the opportunity to exact revenge on Texas in Austin, and Washington could make a gigantic statement in Eugene. James Franklin’s first appearance in the Commonwealth Clash will also be worth watching.

2. Week 7 | Oct. 13-17

This has a case for the deepest slate of the season. We have a true Tier 1 matchup with Ohio State going to Bloomington, and there are high-level Tier 2 games littered throughout the rest of the schedule. Notre Dame faces what might be its biggest test of the season, and the Third Saturday in October should provide plenty of drama. 

1. Week 10 | Nov. 3-7

This may not be the deepest slate of the season, but we’ve got six heavyweight bouts in Week 10. National championship contenders go head-to-head in two separate games, and the rest of the games on this list feature teams with realistic College Football Playoff hopes. Frankly, it’s probably for the best that there aren’t many Tier 3 games this week because these six matchup will command all of our attention.
