Barring a drastic U-turn from Andrew Cavenagh, under-fire Glasgow Rangers boss, Danny Rohl, will be in charge at Ibrox next season, having been given the backing of the club’s hierarchy this week.

Four defeats from the last five Premiership games of the season potentially looked set to be fatal for the German coach, although all the signs point to the 37-year-old leading his side out when 2026/27 rolls around.

He hasn’t yet had a full pre-season, it must be said, while this is a squad set to undergo significant overhaul, with long-serving skipper James Tavernier the headline departure.

A raft of loanees will all likely return to their parent clubs too, albeit with it yet to be seen whether PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year, Mikey Moore, will secure a permanent stay in Glasgow.

Why Rohl is so desperate to keep Moore at Ibrox

It’s been a stellar season for Moore on an individual basis, the teenager shaking off a slow start under Russell Martin to emerge as the real shining light of Rohl’s tenure thus far.

Seven goals and two assists in the Premiership may not exactly jump off the page, but that doesn’t tell the full story, with the 18-year-old having been consistently superb off the left flank.

He’s turned it on in key moments, too, scoring in two Old Firm derbies in 2026, both of which came at Parkhead, while memorably producing a sparkling display in the 2-2 draw with Celtic at Ibrox back in March.

There’s been so much to like about his game, while the Tottenham Hotspur starlet has also impressed off the field too, speaking openly about the mentality issues within the Rangers squad last week:

“I think it will get there but there needs to be a few changes, mentally, within the squad.

“We need to realise the club that we’re playing at, where this club needs to be, how we need to perform in and approach games in certain situations.”

Speaking himself, Rohl has suggested that the club will “try everything” to keep Moore on board, either for next season or for the long term, with the Europa League winner setting the benchmark for further signings to follow regardless.

Rangers could make an even better signing than Moore this summer

Rohl, evidently, is desperate to bring Moore back to Glasgow this summer, although he may also have one eye on a reunion of a different kind, if reports are to be believed.

As SportsBoom noted late last month, Rohl is said to be keen to secure a deal for Southampton starlet, Shea Charles, having previously managed the midfielder back at Hillsborough.

Much may depend on whether the Saints secure promotion this month, with Sheffield United also in the mix, although there is a sense that the Championship playoff hopefuls could look to cash in this summer.

If Rangers could get to the front of the queue, that would represent a real coup for the club and for Rohl, with Charles already proving himself under the German in the past.

The 22-year-old spent the 2024/25 campaign in Sheffield on loan under Rohl, racking up one goal and five assists in 44 games in all competitions.

Formerly of Manchester City’s academy, he joined Southampton initially in 2023, although his form for the Owls secured a return to the Saints’ first team this season.

He has only started 22 Championship games this time around, although in the view of EFL expert, Ali Maxwell, Charles boasts stellar potential, having been tipped to be a future “£50-£60m player“.

“I’m actually so bullish on Shea Charles, that without wanting to over exaggerate, I would say he’s maybe one or two seasons away from being considered a 50 to 60 million pound player.”

Adding such a talent into a key part of the pitch at Ibrox could ensure Charles would actually represent a better, more influential signing than that of Moore, particularly with Nico Raskin’s future uncertain in Glasgow

Shea Charles for Southampton

Hailed as a young “high-potential player” by Rohl, the youngster has already racked up 33 games for Northern Ireland at senior level, while he only recently scored the goal to take Southampton to Wembley in the play-off final, prior to their subsequent expulsion.

Across the last two Championship seasons, he now boasts 12 goals and assists in all, a strong return for a player typically deployed in a deep-lying midfield berth.

With the versatility to feature at centre-back or right-back too, Charles could be such a worthwhile investment, potentially even more so than Moore.

He knows Rohl and knows what is needed to succeed under the young coach, making this a deal that Rangers should certainly prioritise this summer.
