Arsenal’s long-standing admiration for Bruno Guimaraes is back in the spotlight once again, with the Gunners already having had a £55m approach knocked back by Newcastle earlier in the window.

Mikel Arteta’s side tested the waters with an opening offer that fell well short of Newcastle’s valuation, but it always felt like a first move rather than the final word in a drawn-out chase for one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders.

Reports have suggested Arsenal are being tipped to return with a stronger bid, with the club still very much active in the market for a high-level midfielder to add control, aggression and creativity in the middle of the pitch.

While Tottenham’s £100m deal for Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon’s £75m switch to Barcelona have complicated the move, with Eddie Howe’s side now under little financial pressure to entertain a new offer for Guimaraes, Arsenal could still test their resolve again.

“It’s not going to be easy at all for Arsenal to get it done. They could try again,” said reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano this week.

“I would not exclude that because Arsenal really consider Bruno the top target in midfield, but, at the moment, from Newcastle, the message is doors closed.

“So, let’s see what’s going to happen there. And the Bruno Guimares situation is this, as of today.”

Guimaraes, who has become a key figure at St James’ Park since arriving from Lyon, remains a dream target for the north London side, and his situation is once again gathering pace behind the scenes.

According to Football Insider, Newcastle are increasingly concerned about their ability to keep hold of their captain.

Bruno-Guimaraes

There is growing fear within the club that they may not be able to fully shut the door on an exit, especially with interest building from not just Arsenal, but also Man United and Liverpool.

Arsenal, in particular, are understood to have been ‘encouraged’ after making contact with the player’s representatives, a development that has only strengthened their position as contenders if a deal becomes possible.

Credibility

This news comes from Football Insider, who are widely known for producing frequent transfer stories. In transfer media rankings, they boast a lot of accurate calls when it comes to EFL-related news, but also come with a high volume of speculation. Because of that, reports are usually treated with cautious optimism.

Finances

Financially, this deal sits in a difficult but not impossible range for Arsenal. Their rejected £55m bid has already set the tone, with most credible valuations now suggesting Newcastle would only seriously consider offers closer to £70m–£80m given his importance, age and contract situation. Guimaraes is believed to earn around £160,000 a week, rising in proposed new terms, which further inflates his overall package. For Arsenal, it would likely be a structured, staggered deal rather than a straight fee, especially after last summer’s lavish spending.

Insight

Guimaraes began his professional journey in Brazil with Audax before earning a move to Athletico Paranaense, where he developed into one of South America’s most promising midfielders and won the 2020 Olympic gold medal with Brazil. His performances in the Brasileiro and continental competitions earned him a switch to Lyon in 2020, where he quickly adapted to European football. After two impressive years in Ligue 1, Newcastle signed him in 2022, and he has since become a central figure, praised for his leadership, ball progression and ability to control games.

Impact

Guimaraes would add a different edge to Arsenal’s midfield, bringing more aggression, ball-winning and box-to-box play than Odegaard, who is more of a creative technician. Compared to Rice, he offers more going forward but plays at a similar intensity. He would push Norgaard further down the pecking order too, and likely rotate with Zubimendi for balance.

While the Magpies have adopted a firm not-for-sale stance, the situation is far from settled.

Why Arsenal are desperate to sign Bruno Guimaraes

Guimaraes remains central to Eddie Howe’s plans, but Newcastle’s stance is being tested at a difficult time, with uncertainty around squad stability and broader interest in key players across Europe.

The Brazilian midfielder’s importance on and off the pitch makes him one of the hardest assets to replace, yet the growing noise around his future is beginning to worry decision-makers on Tyneside.

From Arsenal’s perspective, Guimaraes offers intensity, technical quality and leadership, the exact profile Arteta has been pushing to add as his side continue to compete at the top end of the Premier League.

The 28-year-old was a major all-rounder for Howe’s side last season, averaging more tackles per 90 in the Premier League than any other Newcastle player whilst also chipping in with nine goals and five assists going forward.

All in all, Guimaraes stood out as the heartbeat of Newcastle’s side, averaging a higher Premier League match rating per game than any of his teammates as well (WhoScored).

While Arteta already has a wealth of elite midfielders at his disposal in the form of Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, Guimaraes would offer a combination of Odegaard’s creativity with a big pinch of Rice and Zubimendi’s composure defensively.

The major obstacle, though, is getting past Newcastle.
