Good news comes at a premium for Newcastle United in this summer transfer window.

Welcoming an upgrade on Nick Pope is part of an extensive to-do list this summer. Whether the Magpies complete that to-do list is the big question.

They already need at least two midfield reinforcements amid serious concerns that Bruno Guimaraes could join Sandro Tonali out the exit door, and the rejection of Johan Manzambi has hardly helped.

The departures have made matters so much worse. Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Tonali have all completed departures over the last 12 months and Newcastle have missed out on their top target to replace every single one of those stars. It’s been an utter disaster.

Carl Rushworth represents the chance to at least get another signing over the line, however. The 24-year-old enjoyed a successful loan spell at Coventry City last season, earning promotion to the Premier League, and is now looking to leave Brighton.

As a modern-day shot-stopper, Rushworth ticks boxes in departments that Pope simply doesn’t. On loan at Coventry, he completed 784 more passes than the Newcastle No.1 and also enjoyed a better save percentage. At 34 years old, it’s time for Pope to step aside and make room for a man 10 years his junior to arrive.

Newcastle gifted green light to sign Rushworth

As reported by TeamTalk, Newcastle have got the green light to sign Rushworth after receiving direct contact from his agent.

The goalkeeper has been offered to the Magpies, and Brighton are increasingly likely to cash in this summer amid his demands.

The 24-year-old has told those in Sussex that he wants to become No.1 at the Amex or head for the exit door. With Bart Verbruggen on course to stay put, it’s likely that Rushworth seals a departure before taking his desired starting spot.

“We’ve talked a lot about him this year and he’s made some very good saves but that one was an extraordinary save, there’s no doubt about it. He’s a top young goalkeeper and obviously been great for us.” – Frank Lampard on Rushworth last season

Rushworth is clearly rated around the Premier League, but it remains to be seen whether Newcastle take advantage of their chance to land his signature.

Newcastle launch offer to sign Lucas Bergvall

Another Premier League player who could be on the move this summer is Lucas Bergvall.

The Swede has told Tottenham Hotspur that he wants to leave the club and that instantly put Newcastle on high alert. Now, David Ornstein has reported that the Magpies have launched an offer worth £46m to sign the midfielder.

Tottenham have rejected that offer, but will consider selling their young star for the right price. It is worth noting that other offers have outbid Newcastle already, sparking familiar concerns that they could miss out on another top target.
