Middlesbrough are hoping to finalise a deal with Red Star for Balthazar Pierret, with the Championship side getting a reply to their first bid.
The French midfielder has built his career the hard way.
Rather than breaking through immediately at one of France’s biggest clubs, he worked his way up from the lower divisions before impressing at Quevilly-Rouen.
That consistency earned him a move to Serie A with Lecce, where he experienced the demands of one of Europe’s toughest leagues before returning to France with Red Star in search of regular football.
Last season, the 26-year-old made three Serie A appearances for Lecce before adding another 13 Ligue 2 matches after his winter switch, giving him valuable experience in two very different competitions.
At 26, Pierret is entering what should be the strongest years of his career.
Standing 6ft 1in, he is a midfielder who enjoys the physical side of the game but is also comfortable receiving possession under pressure. He keeps the ball moving with simple passes, reads danger well and rarely allows opponents time to settle in midfield.
Those qualities would make him an interesting fit for Boro, who are actively targeting new additions to Kim Hellberg’s squad after narrowly missing out on promotion last term.
Pierret is not the type of player who grabs headlines through goals.
Instead, he does the hard work that allows attacking players to shine, making him the sort of signing supporters often appreciate more as the season progresses.

According to Sky Sports journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Middlesbrough are now among the leading contenders to sign Pierret this summer.
His report claims Boro have reached the final stage of the race for the French midfielder as they look to strengthen Hellberg’s squad ahead of another promotion push.
Tavolieri suggests negotiations are progressing, although no agreement has yet been finalised, with Boro having a €300,000 offer rejected, despite including a 10 per cent clause.
Red Star are instead hoping for around €500,000, with Boro attempting to agree a club-to-club deal before negotiating terms with Pierret.
The club have lost Hayden Hackney to Everton and need fresh quality in midfield if they are to challenge near the top of the Championship again. Replacing a player of Hackney’s influence is no easy task, but bringing in an experienced operator like Pierret could help soften that blow.
There would naturally be an adjustment period.

Even so, Pierret has already shown he can adapt to different leagues and different styles throughout his career.
