With Andrey Santos on the way and Ederson potentially joining him if his medical goes to plan, Manchester United have got the chance to focus on other areas away from their midfield.
The next problem to address comes at fullback. Whilst Luke Shaw enjoyed a rare injury-free season last time out, he’s not getting any younger and those at Old Trafford need a long-term, versatile option – making Nottingham Forest‘s Neco Williams the perfect choice.

Credibility |
Nottingham Forest aren’t an easy side to negotiate with but as long as Williams hasn’t signed a new contract, Man United have an opportunity. The fullback is in talks with the Midlands club about extending his deal, which currently runs out in 2029, but interest from Old Trafford could complicate things. |
|
Finances |
Like Elliot Anderson earlier this summer, Evangelos Marinakis is likely to demand a hefty sum to sell Williams this summer, especially if he does sign a new contract. |
|
Insight |
Whilst it was Anderson who received a lot of praise last season, Williams was just as impressive. The former Liverpool man is one of the most consistent fullbacks in the Premier League these days and has more than earned interest from top clubs. |
|
Impact |
It would be a controversial move for the former Liverpool man to make and it would surely end Man United’s pursuit of Lewis Hall. On paper, a deal for Williams at Old Trafford could raise several more questions about the market this summer. |
Williams wouldn’t be the first former Liverpool player to cross the divide to Old Trafford, but that won’t stop the headlines from arriving this summer.
According to BBC Sport’s Sami Mokbel, Man United have now registered their interest in signing Williams in the coming months. Nottingham Forest are still in talks over a new deal with the Welshman, but whilst it remains unsigned, there will be question marks over his future.
It’s an open secret that the Red Devils are after another fullback. With their midfield problems almost solved, they could set their focus directly on hijacking Forest’s contract for Williams.
Neco Williams would end Luke Shaw’s Man Utd career
In one swoop, Man United can solve their left-back problem and get one over on Liverpool. If there’s a deal to be done, then the Red Devils should go all out to sign Williams.
The Welshman received plenty of praise for his standout performances last season, including from Bence Bocsak. The analyst dubbed the Forest man “brilliant” back in March.
It’s hard to argue with that praise and Williams could be on his way to a major move this summer after such an impressive campaign. Whether Forest are able to agree a new deal before that happens remains the big question.
